Do you have assurance in your relationship with God? I John 5:13 gives us a wonderful promise. John says that he has written his letter so that we can know that we have eternal life. We can be certain! But what exactly is eternal life?
In John’s gospel, he records a prayer in which Jesus describes eternal life as knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom He has sent (John 17:3). So, if we combine the truths from these two passages that John wrote, the promise that we glean is that we can know that we know God. We do not have to guess as to whether or not we have a relationship with Christ.
In I John 5:20, we are given even more encouraging assurance in this regard. John writes that “we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”
So what John is saying is that Jesus has come and has given us understanding so that we can know God. God is the One who is true, and He is eternal life. We can be in a relationship with Him. We can abide in Him, know Him, and have eternal life.
Sometimes we think of eternal life as beginning after we die, but these writings of John clearly show that eternal life actually begins in this life, when we come to know Jesus Christ in a personal way, and then continues into eternity. What a blessing! We can know God through Christ in this life and then continue in our relationship with Him in heaven.
We can be certain of our relationship with Christ, and we can share that confidence with others. The greatest message of hope that we can offer people in these uncertain times is that they can come to know God through Jesus Christ by acknowledging their need for forgiveness from their sins and placing their faith in Him. One of the greatest blessings of living like Jesus is living with the assurance that we have eternal life, which is knowing God through Christ.
