Love Like Jesus

One Great Commandment

One Great Commandment

- Greatest Commandment, Love God, Worship

When we think about loving like Jesus, we might think first of loving other people, but loving like Jesus also includes loving and worshipping God.  Jesus’ earthly life and ministry brought glory to the Father, and likewise our lives should be filled with worship to God both in our expressions and in our actions.

There are many examples of worshippers in the Bible who expressed their love for God.  In the Psalms, we read these loving words of worship to God:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!  Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”  Psalm 103: 1-5

“I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.  May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord.”  Psalm 104:33-34

“Oh, give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!  Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!”  Psalm 105:1-3

In the New Testament, we see Jesus often withdrawing to quiet places to pray.  He committed Himself to the will of the Father and sought Him in prayer.  These actions were expressions of loving worship.  Jesus not only showed us this example of how to live, He also taught that this type of expression should be at the forefront of our focus.

In answering a question about the great commandment, Jesus replied, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the great and first commandment” Matthew 22:37-38.  So, Jesus was saying that loving God with all that we are should be our highest priority.

Loving God in the way that Jesus showed us and taught us means loving God with our heart, soul, and mind.  In other words, our affections, our emotions, our thoughts, our actions, and all that we are should be focused on loving God.  The way that we spend our time and our money should reflect this priority.  So should the attitudes we show and the perspective we maintain.

There will be times that we fail to love God completely, but the overarching focus of our lives should be to love God.  Loving like Jesus means living a life of love and worship toward God.

Praise the Lord, O my soul.  May my life be a song of worship to You.
