As Christ followers, we should constantly be in a state of prayer. Prayer is simply a conversation with God. In prayer, we show adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication. In adoration, we talk to God about His character and how we adore Him. In confession, we agree with God about our sin, repent, and seek His forgiveness. In thanksgiving, we give the Lord thanks for who He is and for the blessings He gives us. In supplication, we lift up our requests on our own behalf and on the behalf of others. Then, we also listen. We listen by looking in God’s Word to see how He answers our prayers. We listen by looking hearing from people who are mature believers. We listen by seeing how God answers prayer through our circumstances. Our listening goes hand in hand with our study of the Word of God.
We cannot pray effectively if we do not have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the only One through whom we have access to God the Father. It is only through His work on the cross that we can gain a hearing from the Father. He is our great High Priest who grants us access in prayer. If we have never turned from ourselves and our sin and surrendered to Jesus Christ, we do not have access to the Father in prayer.
Are you praying at all times? Do you have a relationship with Jesus Christ? Are you lifting up your adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and requests to the Father?
Let’s take advantage of the blessed privilege we have through Christ to pray.
